More information about Back Care yoga

The spine is the central structure of our physical body.
Back pain therefore has a profound impact on our lives.
This yoga aims to support, restore and improve the health of the back and spine. The class is for anyone who wants to maintain a pain-free, healthy and strong back, throughout their life.
With the back yoga classes you will get the keys to get your back in top condition.

Mental awareness

Giving your yoga practice full attention is perhaps the biggest task. Yet it is highly essential in yoga practice.
When suffering from back problems, we are sometimes confronted with the fact that we pay little attention to and are not in touch with our body, and more specifically, our back. Being 100% present, focusing our attention helps us to become aware of our back and how we deal with it outside of class.

Breathing

During Back Care yoga we work continuously with the ujjayi breathing technique and sometimes with conscious contraction of certain muscle groups.
We consider our breathing to be the “engine”, guide and driving force of our practice. Since everyone breathes in a different way, there are moments when the participants work at their own rhythm.
In the context of the back, good breathing is crucial. After all, breathing too shallowly and incompletely can lead to tension and blocked energy anywhere in the body, both in the back and the rest of the body.

Posture

In Back Care yoga the four most important functions of physical yoga are all addressed. The tool to support and strengthen these functions is the yoga posture or asana.
The movements and postures come from almost hundreds of described yoga postures. Dynamic postures (movements) alternate with static moments. We continue to take five to seven quiet, deep breaths in each posture.
The series includes lying, sitting and standing postures. Certain props such as chairs, blocks, belts, for example, are available. Because they help to support our yoga practice and to adapt it to each person’s individual physical abilities.

Little by little, we regain mastery over our backs and regain the confidence that we have sometimes lost through our contemporary way of life.

How is a Back Care yoga class structured?

Back Care yoga classes are generally structured as follows:

  • Aiming for presence in the present moment and physical sensation of the body.
  • Activation the ujjayi or oceanic breathing technique prior to the postural sequence.
  • A few short warm-ups.
  • The sequence of postures consisting of lying, sitting, and standing postures.
  • There is special attention to:
    • Maintaining the flexibility of the spine
    • Strengthening of the back muscles
    • Strengthening of the abdominal muscles
  • At the end a short moment of meditation and deep relaxation, lying on our back or in a resting position of your choice.
